Persimmons...

I love them!! Mostly I like the conical shaped Hachiyas, which exhibit a jelly-like consistency and sweetness at the point of perfection. However, I'm developing a little more respect for the crisp Fuyus that seem to have overtaken the marketplace (btw...I planted a Hachiya tree last year!!).

My neighbors, who moved to the US from Italy in the 50's, have an amazing garden (complete w/laying hens!!). Maria brought me a bag full of Fuyus yesterday, topped w/a styrofoam box of just laid eggs (the orangeness of the yolks on these gems is amazing!!). I'm grateful for her generosity...

...candy canes for cookies. We've been on kind of a cookie making binge for the past few weeks. Mainly it's been ginger-molasses cut out cookies, but I thought we'd try something different last night...

Sugar cookie dough that we rolled out, spread crushed candy canes on, rolled up jelly roll fashion, cut into rounds and baked!!

The windows offer me a great view of the east bay hills directly behind the monitor. Through the window to the right I can see the Campanille (clock tower at UC Berkeley) and some of the downtown Oakland skyline.

Back to work...

11-28am, originally uploaded by aikitherese.

Clear and cold out today. A few high, cirrus clouds floating about, but mostly sunshine...

It's good to get back to the routine. People off to work and school, and I'm starting to get organized for the next round of events!! This week should provide darkroom time, so within a few days there could be some new b/w prints for me to scan and post.

I love this time of year...that of pulling in and warming up. I love the contrast of darkness and lights...the aromas of evergreen and spice...the sharing of good wishes and good food. Mostly, I think I like the times of quiet reflection and the motivation for a renewed start with the return of the light after the darkest days...

We had a wonderful time visiting with family, celebrating the holiday and my dad's birthday. It was quite an experience having Thanksgiving dinner aboard the Queen Mary. Lovely old ship...fun to wander...great deco designs... AND...the food was excellent!!

But...it's good to be home. As much fun as I have in SoCal, there's nothing like coming back up to the Bay area... What can I say? It's home now...

Hope you all had a wonderful celebration this past long weekend and are looking forward to the season that's upcoming...that it be filled with warmth and joy...

Cold and little hazy this morning. The air is moist, but no real fog on this side of the Bay...the sun is just about showing itself up over the hills.

I can't believe it's Thanksgiving tomorrow!! For some reason there's a disconnect in my mind and I'm having difficulty accepting the immediacy of the holiday. Still have to get several things done today and all packed up so as to hit the road around 5am Thursday...and hopefully make it to Long Beach for a 4pm dinner (that's giving ourselves plenty of time, but we have to check in at our hotel first, change clothes, yada yada yada...)!! A little hectic, but I'm looking forward to it...

There's a possibility I can check in and post some digitals during my time away...but not 100%.

So...I wish you all a very lovely and warm Thanksgiving holiday. Live in gratitude for all the blessings you may have, large or small...it makes the world seem a kinder place... It's all connected...it's all okay... Grace and peace on all of us...

Sun once again, but moisture very noticeably making it's way back into the weather pattern. Rather chilly out as well, at about 42F and frost further east. Maybe not a big deal compared to other parts of the country, but certainly a feeling of changing seasons...

Various circumstances have put photog on hold (at least anything but digital) probably until after the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope to do some shooting on our trip to SoCal, although then I'll have a backlog of negatives to work with!! It's okay...it's all good...

In the mean time...I've got lots of archived images!!

Point Reyes, CA...

Sunday morning...clear and dry as yesterday...

Many tasks to execute before leaving on Thursday for the holiday. It's always nice to come home to an organized abode.

As the official day for giving thanks draws near (well, that's what it was intended to be anyway), I think of all the things that I'm grateful for. Top of the list, of course, would be my family, then my friends, then my material comforts and care.

Mid-life approaching fast and furious (or has it already arrived?), my appreciation also grows for the opportunity to continually pursue that elusive goal (perhaps not the best word to use) of awareness. I would have to say that at this Thanksgiving, more than any other, I'm grateful to those who have gone before and left helpful guidelines on how to live a genuine life...to know and understand...to develop the skill of being in the moment...to be compassionate...to allow for what is...

Okay...that was a kinda bad...sorry...

Just a quick update while I'm finishing my chai, appropriately amping my self up for the chores that now await...

Practice was wonderful...challenging as usual...I wish I could "see" better there. I thought it might be warmer this morning, but it was quite chilly down in the little hollow at Cordinices park, where we have Saturday morning weapons practice. Clear, dry...and fortunately no wind, otherwise I really would've shivered.

A great big THANK YOU to sensei who continually gives his time so generously to all of us!!!

It's all good...

remembrace, originally uploaded by aikitherese.

What a gorgeous, crystal clear Saturday we have!! The dry winds finally kicked in and have blown all the fog and moisture away for the time being.

Running off to weapons practice shortly, but thought I'd stop by for a short post... Thanks to those of you who've made the effort to sign on and add comments. It's good to "see" you here and I appreciate what you have to say.

Friday evening, Julian spent the night at a friends, so Laurel and I headed over to the theaters in Emeryville to catch a five o'clock showing of "Sideways." Fortunately Matt was able to rendezvous with us on his way back from the aiport. What a fantastic flick!!! Great characterization, painful and funny at the same time. And for those of you who live in the SoCal and Central coast area, you'll have fun recognizing places such as San Diego airport, the hwy south of San Onofre, Solvang, Buellton (where most of the story takes place...well, in the vineyards around there) and even the train trestles at Gaviota (this image was a delightful surprise).

One last note before I run off for now... If there's anyone from surfline going out for a dp session on the Friday after Thanksgiving, in the OC area, give me a holler as I may be up for shooting some b/w action shots :)....

It's Friday...

sfbay, originally uploaded by aikitherese.

Another clear morning...and from the sound of things it will stay so for the weekend. Some winds predicted for later on, but very mild temps. Should be agreeable gardening conditions...

Scheduled randomness is the call for the day. Groceries to be purchased, a little cleaning (I actually used to LIKE cleaning...when I lived alone!!), and the perpetual back-burner projects (...film, FILM!! oh yeah, and that pile of chilis from the garden sitting on my drawing table waiting to be strung and dried). A little exercise, a little "practice" (sedentary, moving and weapons)...trying to be balanced, ya know?

I got my first issue of Tricycle magazine yesterday (a Buddhist quarterly) and was delighted to find an article written by Jeff Greenwald, a favorite author of mine. It's a candid look at his experiences during a 10-day long Vipassana retreat. I admire his fortitude, because that's much, much more than I have ever been able to accomplish. For those interested in self evolution through awareness practice, I highly recommend this publication... And for those interested in some good travel and science writing, do check out Jeff's work. His webpage is http://www.jeffgreenwald.com/

TGIF, everyone!!

Happy Thursday from the SF Bay area. Sunshine this morning, with some fog in the areas closer to the ocean. There's a definite chill in the air...

One week until Thanksgiving, at which time we'll be heading down to SoCal, to celebrate not only the holiday but my dad's 90th b-day. It'll be fun to spend time with everyone and get my "dose" of nostalgia for the upcoming season.

I grew up in the LA area; had my first jobs, first apartment, first (and only) courtship and marriage in the southern end of the state. For that reason, the area still holds special significance for me and I do enjoy the occasional visits. Not to mention, in the past couple years I've formed many new and solid friendships with great folks who live in SoCal (you know who you are!!), which has added a new dimension to my travels there.

Haven't had low fog on this side of the bay in some time. The dampness makes it seem chillier out than it is (around 50F). But it's warm inside, especially with the help of a pot of dragonwell tea.

The usual mid-week errands will dictate activities for today. Three rolls of black and white film still await processing and, of course, printing. But first...there's power steering fluid for the Honda to be procured, a clarinet to be picked up from repair, and the obligatory household management chores to be done (...what IS for dinner tonight??).

Some recent images to follow...and *maybe* more random musings later in the day...
